St Winnow

St Winnow ChurchSt Winnow parish church stands in a remote location, midway between Lerryn and Lostwithiel. It is much-loved and well supported as a place of worship, welcoming everyone in an atmosphere of friendliness and open mindedness. The parish includes St Winnow C of E Primary School with 80 pupils.  Our services are joyful and relaxed. We are always prepared to try new things out. We don’t mind noise! The church is also well used as a venue for events throughout the year such as concerts, talks and Community picnics.

St Nectan’s Chapel is a tiny chapel situated in the middle of fields. We hold services there during the summer months and we also hold a Dawn Eucharist on Easter morning which is extremely well attended.

St Veep

St Veep churchSt Veep’s beautiful Grade 1 listed church stands on a hill, close to the lovely hamlet of Penpol. We are a church that continues to have very close links with the farming community and one of our best attended services is the annual Harvest Festival.

We have a strong respect for both the past and present and so enjoy a mix of services from traditional to contemporary: our much loved Holy Communion taken from the Book of Common Prayer is at 9.30 a.m. on the first Sunday of every month.  On the third Sunday, at 11a.m. is our Family Service which has been flourishing since the turn of the millennium, and on the fourth Sunday at 10.30 a.m. is our "Tea, Toast and Tales" informal children's worship - all co-exist happily to make the church what it is.  Members of the congregation provide refreshments at Tea, Toast and Tales and Family services.  Visitors are most welcome at all services.

Our links to the wider community are very important to us and the church is available for events such as concerts and talks, and we have a flourishing youth club that meets weekly.  Our village school in Lerryn is also very important and the school attends church for major festivals at Christmas, Easter and Harvest.  The bell ringers are also an integral part of the church community and our historic virgin peal of bells originally cast in 1770 was refurbished in 2017. They are rung on the third Sunday of each month and on special occasions.  Our bell ringers always welcome new members, if you would like to have a go.

Boconnoc

Boconnoc church

Boconnoc’s charming church has been welcoming worshippers for around 750 years and is positioned at the heart of the Boconnoc Estate, looking south down the Lerryn Valley. It is a Parish Church, not a private chapel, although there is a very strong and close relationship between the Church and the estate. Boconnoc parish church is unusual in that it has no dedication or name other than that of the parish itself. Although small, it is of importance architecturally being listed Grade 1.

We offer traditional forms of worship to our congregations. The Church is a member of the Prayer Book Society; all Sunday worship is according to the Book of Common Prayer, with readings from the King James’ Bible. We are always happy to welcome visitors to the area who wish to worship with us.

Boconnoc Church is part of the Benefice of six parishes around Lostwithiel.  These churches work together for the Gospel in the area, and complement each other in times and styles of worship. Boconnoc thus provides a home for those who find they best express their faith through traditional words and music. With the exception of major festivals we have: Matins, with traditional hymns, on the second, third and fourth Sunday of each month; Sung Eucharist on the first Sunday. If there is a fifth Sunday, there is a joint service at one of the churches in the Benefice.

In recent years, Boconnoc House has been successfully promoted as a venue for wedding receptions and the church has a very significant marriage ministry. Enquiries about Baptism and Marriage in the church should be made through the church centre office, who can guide you through the process. The office, based at St Bartholomew's church in Lostwithiel, is open between 9 and 12am each weekday, tel. 01208 872232.

Visitors to the church during the week may find the church closed, for reasons of security. It is our policy that you should be free to visit. If the church is not open, then you may be able to gain access by enquiring at the Estate Office, which is situated at the rear of the Stable Yard, behind the church. If you are planning a visit, then please let us know, and we will try to help. We do hope you enjoy your stay in the area and are able to join us for worship.

Directions to Boconnoc Church

The official route into Boconnoc, and the one to take if you are coming from a distance, is from the A390 (the road from Liskeard to Lostwithiel).

Coming from the West, on the A390, turn right onto the B3359 just before East Taphouse. Coming from the East, turn left onto it just as you leave East Taphouse. The B3359 is signed to Looe and Polperro. There is also a brown sign for Porfell Animal Farm.

Follow the B3359 for three quarters of a mile and then take a right turn, and an immediate left turn (signed to Couch’s Mill and Lerryn). You are still following signs to Porfell Animal farm. There are also small white signs for Boconnoc.

After half a mile, take the right turn at the crossroads. There is a small white sign to Boconnoc, visible when you are close to the turning.

After a further half mile, you cross a road to enter the Boconnoc Estate (marked “Private Road”).

Follow this estate road for 2 miles, passing the Obelisk on the right, and the House and the Church come into view.

For parishioners and others attending the church from Couch’s Mill, Lerryn etc., the Boconnoc Estate normally permits the use of the entrance in Couch’s Mill (opposite the old smithy with the post-box in the wall). This is an unmade but passable road that eventually joins a metalled road. Turn right onto the metalled road, and, when you cross the bridge, take the right fork, which leads to Boconnoc House and the church.
