Seagull Race - fundraising & thanksJanuary 6th 2010
A message from the Commodore of the R.L.Y.S. Further to my report on the Seagull Race I am pleased to say that we raised over £400. In addition to that the RNLI raised over £140 in their raffle. After deduction of expenses the committee decided to distribute £300 to local organisations and charities as follows;
Donations of £100 to Lerryn Area Minibus Association, £100 to Friends of Lerryn School for purchase of sports equipment £100 to The Merlin Project.

Message from LAMA Many of the people who used to travel with Jenny on the Lerryn minibus will want to attend her memorial service, so we are providing an additional bus service for that day. The collection times will be as follows: 3.30 Lerryn car park 3.35 Lerryn View 3.55 Grenville Road 4.00 Lostwithiel Library 4.15 St Winnow 4.30 Service starts (provisional time). Parking is very limited at St, Winnow, so we want to make maximum use of the bus and seats will be available to everyone on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. RIVER LERRYN YACHT SQUADRON 22nd Annual British Seagull Outboard Motor Race
This event, held on 29th December, was the wettest Seagull Race for many a year. It rained without let-up before, during and after the race and the grassy river bank was reduced to a squelchy, muddy mess. But even this failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the competitors who braved the elements and dressed themselves and their boats to the theme (Rig of the Day) of “Pantomime”. They ended the race drenched but still smiling and headed to the Ship Inn for warmth, lubrication and the prizegiving. They were supported by a surprising number of doughty spectators who remained on the foreshore, in the rain, throughout the race. Mulled wine and mince pies were available in the Drill Hall all afternoon and a barbeque nearby.
We always expect a much better turnout when the event is held in the week between Christmas and the new year and this year was no exception. 47 boats with between two and five crew entered the race, as against 40 boats last year in much better weather, and most of them finished the course. Can you imagine the characteristic sound of a Seagull engine at full chat? Multiply that by more than fifty times (several boats had two or more engines), add the blue haze hovering above the surface of the river, a few mini oil slicks and people pulling starter cords all along the course, you get the flavour of this famous spectacle. This is one day of the year when nobody worries about carbon footprints or noise pollution! The prize for the Best Dressed Boat was won by Phil James whose boat was dressed as the genie and the lamp and even managed some smoke from the spout of the lamp! The prize for the best dressed crew was won by Rod Tucker who was convincingly dressed as Ali Baba.
The overall winner of the race and winner of the Ship Inn Trophy was Tim Colyer. Class A (Canoes and Catamarans) was won by Andy Reid who also won the “Concours d’elegance” for the best turned out engine. Winner in Class B (Boats 12ft and over) was Tim Colyer. First in Class C (Boats under 12 ft) was Mr. Southcoat. The Fast Lady Trophy (first helmswoman to finish) was won by Caroline Vipond. The Team Trophy was won by the “Boathouse Pirates”. Jenny PearceDecember 30th 2009 We were saddened to hear of the death of Jenny Pearce and we will all miss her cheerful and helpful ways. We have been asked to let you know that her funeral will be on Wednesday 13 January when Canon John Halkes will take the services. The service at the crematorium will be at 3.30pm and is for family members only. The family have arranged a service at St. Winnow Church at 4.30 pm, when all will be welcome THE TIMES OF BOTH SERVICES ARE STILL TO BE CONFIRMED and we will confirm details in due course. RWB
Christmas Day - in spite of the ice !December 28th 2009
Hey! My family and I came down to Lerryn, Lostwithiel in Cornwall for the Christmas period. For the past 3 years we've always walked up to St Veep church for the service on Christmas day. Today however, the ice and harsh weather conditions meant that the people who tried to get to church up the hill couldn't get up there. So instead, with the vicar unable to get to church, we thought we would hold the service in the green. It was a wonderful scene and still without a organ, we sang our heats out to O Come Ye Faithful! It was lucky that no-one was hurt and we still managed to hold a service on Christmas day! Attached is a photo of Lerryn community attending the service on the green by the river! RWB Carols round the Xmas TreeDecember 23rd 2009 Despite the freezing weather and treacherous conditions underfoot, the Hall was full for the traditional evening of Christmas Carols. Led by David Vipond on vocal chords and tambourine, the community singing was loud, in tune (most of the time) and very enthusiastic, the high points being provided by the children. Paul King, Jim Kelly and friends, provided excellent musical accompaniment, and the mince pies and mulled wine made the whole evening go with a swing. Our thanks to Ros and the Hall committee for a splendid event which has now become a Lerryn tradition. Did anyone take photographs? RWB
