|I recently was visited by a TalkTalk IT engineer having complained about the slow speed of my internet service. He checked all my connections inc. those in the loft and passed them all as A1OK. He tried to do a speed check, which he found he was unable to do. He concluded that there was a fault in the TalkTalk equipment in the Lostwithiel exchange which he reported and which should, in due course, be corrected. He did a bit of deft work and said my speed should now be a bit faster. After he left I was unable to get the net to work at all! However it worked fine the next weekday , but it is slow to the point of uselessness at the week ends.
The school has a fibre optic connection. Why can't we be connected to that? Ronald Elliott <ronald.elliott@onetel.net>

|Hi Everyone - Broadband is a big issue for me with Encounter Walking Holidays as it slows down mine and other staffs work in Lerryn which is nearly all online these days (well...ok not the walking but the rest of it).

This is what I know !

I live in Lostwithiel, have recently signed up to BT Ifinety and enjoy speeds of 15 megabit - yes wow ! In Lerryn along with the rest of you my business despite every trick we have tried gets anything from .75 to 1.25 megabit on a good day -

I've had long chats with BT about this and whilst versions vary the general theme is. Lerryn along with most of Cornwalls villages will get BT Infinity within 2 years so you too will get much faster connections.... - the contract for the work is signed a reasonble chunk of Cornwall already connected and BT have to provide it by 2014. A new Box which is required for this will have to be sited in the village which will probably mean we are later rather than earlier. BT are currently switching on little villages all over Cornwall as part of the contract and once you are on you will get in general 15 mega bits or more - Upton Cross enjoys this for instance and that's pretty remote.

Forget anything other than the Satellite option Annie Mentions which costs.... until the new BT Infinity / Fibre Optic cable arrives. Yes Ronald is quite right should have been connected with the school but lost chance there with Government Policy at that time - can't be done and won't be done - schools got the cables for their own use !

So Lerryn will wait anything up to 2 years. Now - having spokent to the BT Engineer who installed me at Lostwithiel its quite clear that who comes online first is to a degree up for grabs....its not all planned in at this stage. Much as I don't have too much appetite for another campaign it strikes me that IF the village got together and put pressure on BT, the businesses that rely on internet speeds, you consumers a few petitions, lists of people ready to sign up for BT Infinity, help from the Parish Council re siting of the new Fibre Optic Box etc and we could well jump ourselves up the list. We may get lucky and be sooner rather than later but given we are not the biggest community AND don't have the equipment here yet I suspect we will be one of the later ones.

For those in very outlying positions in theory if the fibre optic is laid to Lerryn this will still help your speeds a lot as every metre from the exchanges slows the signal ...hence the issues in Penpoll. BT claim to also be looking at using existing televion transmitters as another way of reaching outlying communities with an almost wireless type signal but note this is NOT part of the Goven contract to provide so may take longer.

So are there Lerryn residents / businesses happy to meet up and discuss how we can propell a campaign at BT to convince them we should be done as soon as possible.

If so I am happy to try and push this as it has big issues for Encounter Walking but also I am sure for anyone trying to use the intenet out here.

Anyone keen to try and get together about this repsond to this (if you have the speed to connect !) if we get a handful of names together lets try and push BT and at least get more information on when we will get the super fast stuff at least - then we can try and pressure them to connect it..... like.... super fast.

|Thanks for the info Damon...I didn't really expect to get super fast in my lifetime!!! I only use the net for social purposes so speed is not really an issue for me.....however, very happy to support any community campaign / petition for faster connection soonest, especially if it involves giving BT a hard time!! Really need local business to push for this, think they will have more weight! Will watch this space.

|Count me in! Although I spend a lot of time in London I would love to be able to work from home in Penpol but the slow internet speed is quite restricting for me. Let me know how I can help and maybe we'll get something before I retire in 2020!!

|Hi,

I would be more than happy to support this, currently broadband speeds of between 0.4mb & 1.0 mb. My work involves lots of communication worldwide and this is proving difficult/impossible at times!!!

Let's try and bring this faster connection to Lerryn super fast!!!

|GOOD NEWS AT LAST !

Not much detail about when BUT the good news for Lerryn is that the BT Open Reach workers in the village yesterday were indeed starting work on putting fibre optic cable in for super fast broadband so we are not going to be left out !

They were at pains to point out that a broadband box etc still needs to be installed in the village so don't expect it to happen tomorrow - BUT it is comming and we will all get the proper internet speeds that places like Lostwithiel and Truro now enjoy.

BT tend to carpet bomb residents with letters once they are operational with superfast broadband (to try and sign you up for it before Virgin)..... so don't worry you won't miss out on knowing as soon as the service is available for subscription

Meanwhile if we can get any indication on a provisional start date we will post it here.

|Some of the more observant of you may have already worked it out

I spoke to the BT guys in the main Car Park today (21st March) who confirmed they are laying the cable now for Superfast Broadband so we will get it and it will be soon. They are finishing the line in Lerryn and Lostwithiel right now - it will extend onto Poluran and they are not sure if we will get switched on before that length is done.

However either way its coming soon - many thanks to all those who emailed to put pressure on the Broadband Team to try and push this forward

BT will invairably send letters to try and hook you all into it as soon as its ready to go but we will advise further on the website so keep checking back.

All hail the end of Buffering and egg timers
