Kill Cord

You may well have heard about the accident at Pentewan Sands, near Mevagissey, yesterday.  A father and son suffered serious leg and head injuries when they were thrown out of their Dory.  Because a kill cord had not been attached correctly, the engine of the boat kept running and the boat continued to circle, running over the two people twice.

This shows the importance of using a kill cord with your outboard motor.  It should be attached to the engine at one end and to the body of the helmsman at the other.  In the case of an unfortunate accident, resulting in the person being thrown overboard, the cord will detach from the motor and the engine will cease to run.
