Report on the 31st Lerryn Seagull Race of 21st December 2019

“What care we though for wind and weather,” was the apt refrain of the intrepid mariners who took part in the 31st annual River Lerryn Yacht Squadron Seagull Race. The conditions in the morning seemed perfect for the race. The theme this year was ‘Drag Race’. Competitors, many appropriately dressed, eagerly prepared their craft hoping that the forecast for wind and heavy rain was over pessimistic. The forecast said that the rain would come at 1.00pm. In anticipation of this it was decided to start the race as soon as all competitors were ready.

After the safety briefing,  crews boarded their craft, and waited for the signal to start their engines and begin the race. Then the heavens opened. Despite the torrential rain, competition was both frenzied and fierce as two laps of the taxing course from Lerryn to St Winnow Point and back were negotiated. Safety boats were deployed in case of incidents as well as the police launch which acted as a fast response vessel, in case of emergency.

After 40 minutes very wet competitors began to finish, rushing to the Drill Hall to ring the bell and have their position  recorded. Here they warmed themselves with mulled wine and hot mince pies, and if required thermal blankets.

When all were counted in, everyone relocated to the Ship Inn for further refreshment and the prize giving.

We are very grateful to Chris Parks, for the donation of the numbered tabards that the competitors wore, sponsored by ‘Surfworks’ and ‘Ollie’s Gardens’. Also to businesses in Fowey, Lerryn, Lostwithiel and St Austell, who donated prizes for the winning competitors and the raffle.

Thanks to all the members of the RLYS who, once again, put on such a quirky and entertaining event.
