Bocconoc Garden opening a success for the RNLI

May 19th 2009

Boconnoc Gardens opened for the RNLI on Sunday May 10th by kind permission of Mr and Mrs Anthony Fortescue.

It was a glorious day and visitors streamed in to enjoy the magnificent displays of rhododendrons, azaleas and bluebells in a beautiful setting. In addition, there was a fascinating display of horse drawn carriages provided by the Cornwall branch of the British Driving Society. The sight of perfectly turned out carriages being driven around Boconnoc was amazing – it certainly awed some American visitors!

The stable yard provided a sunny spot to enjoy various stalls and displays – RNLI lifeguards, RNLI souvenirs, Treleaven’s ice-cream, Proper Plants, pottery, jewellery and cards – as well as delicious teas. The committee and helpers had provided a veritable feast – Cornish cream teas and a mouth-watering range of home-made cakes. Not surprisingly, many people who had opted for splits or scones and cream came back for a slice of cake!

At the time of writing, we have raised nearly £700, but donations are still coming in. We have to say a special thank you to Rhodda’s who gave the clotted cream, Morrison’s who donated the splits and Lerryn Village Stores who donated the milk. In addition, we have to thank the many supporters who baked for us, who gave up their time to help run the event and who turned up to support us on the day. THANK YOU, EVERYONE!

River Hazard St Winnow Point

May 15th 2009

Its been there a while now and is not going anywhere.

The very large tree trunk in the mud near St Winnow Point has now been reported to the Harbour Master.  This big lump sits not far below the surface on the mid tides and is almost impossible to spot until you hit it with your outboard.  (Note this is not the branches in the mud close to the shore - this thing is part of tree trunk and very large.

Its situation is around 1/3 of the way across the river from the St Winnow Point side in a direct line with the Lerryn end of Brockles Quay. Note therefore that the log is not in the channel - if you are in the channel you won't hit it - however if you are cutting the St Winnow Point Corner on the way back from upriver its in your path.

To help stop any collisions, in the meantime, Tim and Damon from Encounter Cornwall have put a small white buoy with a red mark on the hazard so keep clear of this if you are coming back from upriver in a hurry and taking shortcuts !

Message for the village

May 12th 2009

Mark and Lizzie would like to send our huge apologies to the villagers of Lerryn for all the noise their builders are making at Waters Reach on the north bank!

The builders and workmen are going at a seriously fast pace to get it done as soon as possible.

We appreciate how wonderfully quiet Lerryn is and feel very guilty that we are temporarily shattering the peace but hope it will not be for much longer.

More information is to follow on the page about the Council so keep checking back.
