Whitecross & District Gardening Club Talk
Thursday 18th September 2025
Our first speaker is Dr Frances Howard who will be coming to Whitecross Village Hall on Thursday 18th September 2025. She will be talking about The Historic Daffodils of the Tamar Valley.
Frances was a paediatrician and exchanges unusual looking children for unusual looking daffodils – her own description! She has written for the Cornwall Garden Society and the Daffodil Society and on Market Gardening for the Dartmoor Magazine. Her daffodils were featured in “The Great Garden Revival” with Carol Klein. The Garden at Weir Cottage where Frances lives, close to the river Tamar, was laid out in the 1930s by Lady Harriet Thistleton Dyer, who was the widow of the third director of Kew Gardens. It is close to the lanes along the river where the historic daffodils abound in spring. We had a garden club outing there last year and it is a place of magic.
The 3 Stems Competition
Who has won last year’s competition? We will let you know on Thursday 18th September.
We would like to continue the 3 Stems Competition and invite you to bring 3 stems of the same flower or different flowers from you garden each month. Place them in a vase and bring a slip of paper with your name on one side and the names of your flowers on the other side (if you don’t know the names leave it blank). You don’t need to enter every month.
We will ask our speaker to judge first, second and third places for the flowers and this will be recorded over the months, and the overall winner will receive a prize in September 2026. It has been really interesting to see the variety of stems entered and what can be found even in the depths of winter.
Garden Club membership renewal is due at the September meeting. Membership for the year is still £10. Sadly, the club no longer receives free banking so we would appreciate it if you could pay by cash as this will be the easiest and cheapest way we can deal with money at the moment.
We look forward to seeing you all on Thursday 18th September and any visitors or new members would be very welcome, please do come along. Visitors £3 which is deducted from the £10 annual fee if you subsequently take out membership.
