Try your hand at Handel !

March 29th 2010

Put October 2 In Your Diaries!
“You don’t have to be an experienced singer or read music to join in.” That’s the message from Friends of Boconnoc Church, who have arranged a “Scratch” Messiah in the church on Saturday 2 October. The conductor Paul Ellis will lead the rehearsals and the performance.
Singers will start after lunch for the run-through; there’s a break for an early light supper; and, after those who have come only to listen have taken their seats, the performance starts around 7 p.m.
Exact times, ticket prices, and other arrangements will be advised nearer the time.

Lerryn Boatwatch Launches This Weekend

March 29th 2010

There we go then -  the new Lerryn Boat Watch logo.

You will see signs going up around the waterside provided by the police displaying this which will hopefully discourage those up to no good from seeing us as an easy target.

Everyone registering their boat, be it a yacht or a canoe, will also have a sticker to display to show that your vessel is registered with and part of the boat watch scheme.

Boatwatch Launch Event - This Saturday 3rd April

All boat owners wanting to register please come along any time between 9am and 11.00am to register your boat, collect your stickers and see some of the latest anti theft ideas and accessories on display.

Devon and Cornwall Police and Damon and Tim (Lerryn Boatwatch co-ordinators) will be on hand to take your boat details and give any more information about the scheme AND about keeping your boat safe in Lerryn.

On the day you will also find

-  Boats in the car park demonstrating the latest locks and general security protection available.

-  Two great cheap and simple anti theft devices from the Police desgined specially for boats and outboards including a revolutionary new Microdot security marking system for boats that is long lasting and dependable in the marine environment -  ALL boats should have this !

-  The chance to talk to the police about how to improve the security of your boat, accessories and also any sheds and outbuildings used for marine items

-  The chance to pass on your views and ideas about cutting marine crime - what you think would be useful and what you think Lerryn Boatwatch should be doing to help.

Tim and Damon will be taking details to register your boat so we can help watch over it on a simple form that will only take a couple of minutes to fill in.  If you have information such as serial numbers of engines or boats then please bring this with you but if not no problem -  you can take the form away and return it later.

If the weather is not supporting the event then look for signs to a building close by where registration will take place under cover !

Get Registered ,  Get Your Sticker and lets make Lerryn a no go area for marine crime.

Any questions prior to the registration call Damon on 01208 871066 or PC Tom Barnes on 01503 266173.

We will organise a way for anyone unable to attend to register for the scheme and announce it on the village website and noticeboards  but please try and come along even if its just to collect your form on the day ...... or failing that send someone to get it for you.

Can you help ?

Pub quiz for website

Quiz for Website

The Ship in Lerryn was busy on the night of 27th March - the quiz organised by Keith and Jenny Rooker proving very popular as usual. This time, the proceeds went towards the maintenance and development of our village website. A good time was had by all - the formidable team "Mums Aloud" or is that "Mums Allowed" - anyway, I noticed a Dad on their team - walked away with the prize for highest points.

Entrance fees and raffle tickets provided an amount of £114 for the website. Many thanks to Keith and Jenny for their hard work and to Jonny for his donation of £5 to the website and provision of liquid prizes!

Some flyers were distributed, inviting anyone interested in contributing ideas and/or helping with the administration and continued development of the website, in an informal way, to contact lerryn.net. If you are one of those who picked up a leaflet and found it of interest (as well as being a useful paper for making notes!) we'd be happy to hear from you - use the "contact us" button on the left hand column of the home page - or phone 01208 871066.

WI Foraging episode 2

March 28th 2010

Alexander, wild garlic, pennywort (penny royal), nettles and hairybitter cress were all on the menu for Lerryn W.I.’s Spring Foraging Day on Thursday 25th March. This was the second outing arranged by Sue Daw, to Cotna Barton, home of David and Sarah Readman (married on the 29th. March 2010) for a "wild food walk and lunch feast" led by Rachel Lambert.
We met at Lobb's Farm Shop at Heligan and there was a leisurely walk down to the bottom of the valley to pick penny wort and wild garlic – not to be confused with the three cornered garlic – which would form the basis of the canapes and risotto and then back to Cotna Barton where we picked Alexander, nettles and hairybitter cress.
During a short break, we enjoyed some of Sarah’s delicious parsnip and honey cake. WI members Julia and Rosemary had gorse flower tea, which looked wonderful, while the less adventurous among us settled for "common or garden" tea or coffee.
Then it was all hands to the kitchen where we chopped and peeled, scrubbed and mixed the foods under the careful and informative tuition of Rachel and Sarah. The meal was superb the nettle soup was delicious – move over Ms. Dahl. The Alexander Risotto was a dream and the sloe chocolate washed down with dandelion root coffee was a fitting end to a fabulous day.
To whoever thinks of the WI as staid "bring on the woodland jam and the wild food" is all I have to say!!

Watch your Outboards!!

March 26th 2010

In the last few days an apparently well organised gang have stolen 4 outboards from the FHC boatyard at Penmarlam and 10 from Rock. This follows similar incidents in the South and South East of England.

If you are at all suspicious of activities around boats in Lerryn please contact the Police immediately, on 999 if the activity is in progress, or 08452 777444  after the event. If possible please note vehicle registrations, descriptions and numbers of those involved.

Please check your boats regularly.

Lerryn WI Learns about Lambing !

March 22nd 2010

On Wednesday 17th March, a group of Lerryn WI ladies, suitably dressed in wellies and jackets, made their way up to Collon Barton Farm, where lambing was in progress. We spent a very informative couple of hours - not only getting a close view of the sheep and lambs, but also being given a most informative commentary by Anne and Iain Mackie. Although we did not witness the birth of a lamb (these things being impossible to schedule!) we did see various other procedures carried out and were able to get some "hands on" experience (not for the faint hearted!). Grateful thanks are due to Anne and Iain, not only for a fascinating experience - but also for their kind invitation to their house, where sherry was served and more of our questions answered. All this at a very busy time of year for them. Three of the pictures feature the youngest member of the party (though not yet a WI member!) enjoying the outing, including a ride on the quad bike with Anne Mackie. The fourth picture shows Lerryn W.I. members paying close attention to Ian's explanations of the problems sometimes encountered during lambing.

Copy of Car Parking Questionnaire

March 10th 2010

In response to a number of requests, a copy of the Cornwall Council Car Parking Questionnaire can be accessed by clicking below.

It is vitally important to the economic wealth of our village that the Car Park remains free, and to ensure the long term local management of the car Park, it's ownership should be transferred to St Veep Parish Council.  A request to transfer ownership of the Car Park to the Parish Council was made last year under Cornwall Council's Localism agenda, however, as yet, no decision has been made.

Please download as many copies of the questionnaire as you, your family and friends need, and return completed copies to the address on the form or to the box in Lerryn River Stores, by 21 April.
